Today, March 18, 2026, the Bank of Canada (BoC) announced its second interest rate decision of the year. In a move that many economists anticipated but one that carries significant weight given the current global climate, the Bank has chosen to stay the course.
Here’s a breakdown of what happened and what it means for your wallet.
For the third consecutive time, the Bank of Canada has maintained its target for the overnight rate at 2.25%. The Bank Rate remains at 2.50%, and the deposit rate is 2.20%.
While the "hold" might feel like old news, the context behind this decision is anything but. Governor Tiff Macklem described a "dilemma" facing the governing council: a cooling domestic economy vs. new global inflationary pressures.
The Bank is essentially caught between two opposing forces:
The Energy Shock: The escalating conflict in the Middle East—specifically the war in Iran—has sent oil prices soaring toward $100 per barrel. This is expected to push inflation higher in the short term.
Domestic Weakness: Canada’s economy is showing signs of fatigue. GDP shrank by 0.6% in the final quarter of last year, and the labor market lost roughly 84,000 jobs in February, pushing the unemployment rate up to 6.7%.
"We can't fix the war," Macklem stated. "What we can do, though... is ensure that if energy prices stay high, that it does not become ongoing, generalized, persistent inflation."
Variable-Rate Holders: Since the prime rate is unlikely to move following this announcement, your payments (or the portion going toward principal) should remain steady for now.
Fixed-Rate Seekers: Fixed rates are influenced by the bond market. With global uncertainty and rising oil prices causing bond yields to fluctuate, we may see some volatility in fixed-term offers even without a BoC move.
While inflation recently dipped to 1.8% in February (well within the Bank's 1–3% target), today's warning suggests we should prepare for a "bump" in the coming months as higher gas prices filter through the economy.
The Bank explicitly mentioned that it is too early to tell how long the Middle East conflict or U.S. trade policy uncertainties will last. They are choosing to be "patient but vigilant," essentially keeping their powder dry until they see how these external shocks settle.
The next major milestone is April 29, 2026. This will be a "double-feature" day where the Bank not only announces the next rate decision but also releases its full Monetary Policy Report (MPR). This report will provide the updated forecasts for growth and inflation that will likely dictate whether rates stay flat or start to move in the second half of the year.
The Bottom Line: For now, the era of stable rates continues, but the world around us is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
